Answer engine optimization

The AI-generated summaries Google shows above its search results.

Answer engine

A search tool that returns a written answer instead of a list of links.

Canonical

Canonical URL

The tag that marks which address is the correct one for a page.

Citable content

Text written so an engine can pull it out and attribute it with no extra work.

Citation

The link an answer engine uses to show where a claim came from.

ClaudeBot

Anthropic's crawler. Two other names are handled separately.

Crawl budget

How many pages a crawler is willing to request from you in a given period.

FAQPage

The Schema.org type for marking up a frequently asked questions page.

GEO

Generative engine optimization

Getting a brand named in the answers AI systems write.

Google-Extended

The robots.txt switch that decides whether Google can use your site for Gemini.

GPTBot

OpenAI's crawler. Not the only name the company declares.

Grounding

Tying an AI's answer to specific, checkable documents.

Hallucination

A claim an AI states as fact that isn't true.

JSON-LD

The recommended format for writing a website's structured data.

LLM

Large language model

The type of program behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Claude.

llms.txt

A proposed file that summarizes your site for an AI.

PerplexityBot

Perplexity AI's crawler, with a second agent for answering live.

Prompt

The text someone writes to ask an AI for something.

RAG

Retrieval augmented generation

Searching for documents before answering and writing from what was found.

robots.txt

The file that tells crawlers which parts of your site they can access.

Schema.org

The shared vocabulary used to describe a website's content.

Share of voice

The percentage of questions where an answer engine names your brand.
