What is RAG?

RAG stands for retrieval augmented generation: the technique of searching for relevant documents before answering, then feeding them to the model so it writes its answer from them. It's what lets an AI discuss things that weren't in its training data and point to where each claim came from. Nearly every answer engine today works this way when a question calls for it: retrieve pages from the web first, then write the response.
