Large language model

What is LLM?

LLM stands for large language model: the type of program behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Claude. It's trained on huge amounts of text, and what it does, at its core, is predict what text is likely to come next. That produces two important traits: it can write fluently about almost anything, and it doesn't inherently distinguish between what it knows and what it's making up. That's why today's answer engines pair it with web search.
