How to show up in Claude: why it names some brands and not others

Claude also searches the web when the question calls for it, and cites the domains it takes the information from. Here is how it works, what you can do, how we measure it, and the Anthropic agents that need to be able to read your site.

How does Claude decide which brands to name?

When the question calls for it, Claude searches the web, reads the pages it finds and writes the answer citing the domains each piece came from. The brands it names come from there.

The pattern is the same as with the other three: retrieve sources first, summarize second, and show where the information comes from. What changes between engines is what each one ends up reading, not the mechanics.

For a brand, the consequence is the same: if you're not on the pages consulted for that question, there's no text for you to come out of.

How Anthropic selects sources internally isn't public, and we're not going to fill that gap with guesses that sound good.

If half of these terms are new to you, they are all explained in the glossary.

What can you do to show up more in Claude?

The same things that work for the other three: direct answers to buying questions, data that can be read without guessing, and a presence on the pages that already get cited in your industry.

Write so you can be quoted in one sentence

If the answer to the question is spread across three paragraphs and a conditional, it doesn't get quoted. Put the whole answer at the start and expand on it afterward.

Let the facts be facts

What you do, where, for whom, since when, how much it costs. Specific and verifiable. An engine that summarizes relies on what it can verify on your page, not on adjectives.

Mark up your pages with structured data

JSON-LD with Schema.org is the cheap way to tell a machine what each thing is without it having to work it out from the text.

Check all three Anthropic agents

There are three names, including an old one that is still honored. All it takes is your robots.txt blocking the wrong one to close a door on you.

How do we measure it?

We send it your set of buying questions with live search on and read the answers. The specific model we query for Claude is anthropic/claude-sonnet-5, with OpenRouter's web search plugin.

Model we query for Claude

anthropic/claude-sonnet-5:online

Via OpenRouter, with the web search plugin turned on (the :online suffix). It isn't the consumer app, it's the model through the API.

To be clear: we don't query the Claude app. We query Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 5 model through OpenRouter, with the web search plugin turned on, which OpenRouter marks with the :online suffix.

If it fails, the fallback for Claude is anthropic/claude-haiku-4.5, the small, fast model in the family: always an Anthropic model.

What is comparable stays the same: whether you show up, in what position, in what tone and with which competitors next to you, measured the same way every month.

Does your site let Claude in?

It depends on your robots.txt. Anthropic declares three agents, one of them carried over from earlier, and many robots.txt files only cover one.

  • ClaudeBotCrawls your site for Anthropic.
  • Claude-UserVisits your site when someone asks Claude about you.
  • anthropic-aiAn older name that Anthropic still honors.

The typical case is a rule for ClaudeBot and none for the other two, or the reverse: an old anthropic-ai block nobody remembers adding. The checker reviews them separately and shows you the exact rule in your robots.txt that applies to each one.
